Sacristy of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian

This is the most important attraction of the monastery of St. John and it is considered to be the biggest museum in the Aegean. It was inaugurated in 1988, nine hundred years since the founding of the monastery. In the museum's showcases there are valuable treasures such as the parchment of the Crimson Code (late 5th early 6th century) and the edict of Alexios Komninos (1088) with which he gave the whole island of Patmos to Saint Christodoulos.

Kathismata

The hermitages of Patmos are also known as “kathismata” (=”seats” in Greek). The cells were established by monks inside caves and they were usually depending on the Monastery of St. John the Theologian. Kalikatsou, the most ancient hermitage, is located at Petra (=”rock” in Greek). In the "seat" of Apollo (a person of the New Testament, fiery preacher of the Gospel) there is a windmill, a threshing floor and a well. Today many of the cells are restored and have become extensions of the auxiliary buildings beside them.
